  • "California State Fair Bears," mother and daughter.
  • "Less Than 24." I Clarissa (mom) had been working on my piece for months and Vanessa (daughter), had not had time due to finals. When she finally had time, slides were due the next day by 5 pm post mark. Vanessa sat down and started painting and she painted all night, went to bed and finished the next morning. We mailed slides just in time for a postmark by 5 pm! The results came a few days later and Vanessa now in 5th grade won entrance to, "The 1997 California State Fair," mom did not win entrance.
  • 1996 California State Fair “Big Fun Ferris Wheel,” Division 410 - 3-D artwork This piece was a drect entry to the “California Works Exhibit,” Class 4 – Recycle with the theme of the 1996 state fair in the name of the piece. There were 1,150 entries and only 170 were selected for display in the exhibit. Over the years I had had friends, bring items to my house that they just couldn’t throw away and said, surely I could create a piece of art. See the Ferris Wheel Newspaper for the, "Who am I," answers!
  • Later that summer while driving from Blythe to Redding, Ca., I stopped at a Kmart for some snacks and we walked by the jewelry section where they had a cylinder full of old watch batteries. I asked the clerk, what are they going to do with all those watch batteries and this was a long time before recycling was happening for our disposal sites and she said we’re just gonna throw them away. I asked her can I have them and she reached over and gave me the whole cylinder full at least 3,000 batteries.
  • I use the metal frame that was given to me and I shaped all these batteries in the famous little people and made a very small Ferris wheel that one first place. It was about 20 inches in circumference. I made a very small 20” circle. When we moved from Blythe, California to Lancaster, California, I requested the California state affair catalog and that’s when I saw there was a recycling section for the fine arts. I as a lot of artist, wanted to see if I was real Artist and I designed another Ferris wheel.
  • I made more little people to go on the huge Ferris wheel and I made designer clothes for them. It’s always been super fun for everyone to try and guess who the famous people are so at the 1996 California state fair/California Works exhibition I won Honorable Mention (Judges favorite!), and out of 1,150 people entering, that’s a pretty amazing achievement to finally realize, “Yes, I am a real Artist.”

A Three-Generation Tribute to California Oil Industry Heritage

The Story

Decades ago, inspired by a visit to the historic Union Oil Museum in Santa Paula, California, our family — Clarissa, Vanessa, and Kierah — created this vibrant, historically accurate watercolor and ink painting titled ©"Lyman and Will Stewart."

In the Museum's magnificent Boardroom, a decorative tile on the fireplace captured our imagination: two frogs, which we envisioned as Lyman Stewart — founder of the Union Oil Company — clutching his heart in relief at finally striking oil, and his son Will Stewart, leaping with joy at the thought of a new automobile.

The checkered design surrounding the frogs was painted in faithful tribute to the Flax Oil Linoleum floor of the Museum's second story — a historically accurate detail lovingly preserved in our work.

In 2026, our granddaughter and youngest collaborator Kierah, age 10, added her own watercolors — making "Lyman and Will" a true three-generation work of art.

New Research — March 18, 2026

Research confirmed by Director Jennifer Heighton of the Santa Paula Art Museum and Research Specialist Craig Held of the Santa Paula Blanchard Community Library reveals that these two frogs are part of a group of 17 tiles known as "The Wedding Party." As the only tile featuring two frogs at the Union Oil Museum, we are honored to preserve and celebrate the story of Lyman and Will.

The tile was produced by the American Encaustic Tile Company (AETCo), founded in 1875, with tile artist Herman Mueller, a German-American sculptor.
