About "Stampede I" - Echoes of Ancient Hoofbeats:
In this magnificent watercolor, the artistic mastery of layered vision reaches new heights. Born from the same weekly journeys along Interstate 10 between the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains, "Stampede II" captures not just the dramatic beauty of Southern California's mountain ranges, but the ghostly echoes of horses that once thundered through these very landscapes.
While no wild horses currently roam the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains, the spirit of ancient hoofbeats lives on in nearby San Diego County, where the Coyote Canyon Heritage Horse Herd - the Caballos d'Anza - still runs free. These magnificent feral horses trace their bloodline directly to the Spanish explorers who first brought horses to this sacred land, carrying centuries of wild freedom in their DNA.
Using the profound artistic principle "What is painted first the viewer sees last, and what is painted last the viewer sees first," this masterpiece layers history itself. The horses - painted first as foundational spirits - represent the ancient heritage of Spanish exploration and wild freedom. The vibrant mountain landscape - painted last to capture the eye - shows the terrain as we see it today, seemingly empty but forever marked by the thunder of hoofbeats.
At 17" x 23", this watercolor gives the full scope to both the hidden stampede and the dramatic mountain vista. The flowing watercolors in purples, oranges, and vibrant earth tones create such dynamic movement that viewers can almost hear the distant echo of the Caballos d'Anza racing through time itself.
A tribute to the wild horses that shaped this land, painted by artists who understand that some spirits never truly leave.
