"News Break with CNN and USA TODAY" 1997

Clarissa had always volunteered in her two children's classes to teach art from 1985 thru 1999. While Vanessa was in the 5th grade, I challenged all the kids I had been volunteering to teach art to, to watch the evening news and write down the Trial and name of the many Trial Artists in the news.

I wrote to several Trial Artists including Walt Stewart of CNN, asking about their education requirements, pay, travel demands, and career longevity as Trial Artists. Walt Stewart graciously responded with a handwritten letter sharing his insights about working as a courtroom artist.

From Walt Stewart's letter, he mentions working in television as a courtroom artist in 1997, discussing the challenges and rewards of the profession. He writes about being involved in high-profile cases and the unique perspective courtroom artists bring to major trials.

I didn't just correspond with Walt Stewart - I have an actual piece of his courtroom artistry from one of the most significant trials in U.S. history!

The USA TODAY article "McVeigh trial puts artists in spotlight" by Richard Willing discusses how the Timothy McVeigh trial brought national attention to courtroom artists, as cameras weren't allowed in federal court. The article explains how these artists work under intense pressure to capture crucial moments during major trials.
