It is here in Angels Camp, CA, where the Whittles and Carpenters did mining and farming.
Back in 1865 a gentleman by the name of Samuel Clemens came to town and he was a writer. He was intriged by the Frog Jump!
The Story and Mark Twain

1865:
Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) spent time in Angels Camp and wrote his first successful short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County".

The Story:
The humorous tale features a gambler named Jim Smiley and his prized frog, Dan'l Webster, who bets on the frog's jumping abilities.

Significance:
The story helped launch Twain's career as a humorist and put the area on the map.
The First Jumping Frog Jubilee

1928:
The town's Boosters created the first Jumping Frog Jubilee to celebrate the paving of Angels Camp's Main Street.

Merger:
The event soon merged with the Calaveras County Fair, which had begun in 1893.
The Modern Frog Jump

Annual Event:
The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee is now held annually in Angels Camp each May.

Celebration:
The event includes a parade, a children's parade, and the Frog Jumping Jubilee, which culminates with the International Frog Jump Grand Finals.

Hop of Fame:
The winning frogs and jockeys are immortalized on brass plaques in the historic downtown area.

World Record:
The world record for the longest jump was set by Rosie the Ribeter in 1986 at 21 feet, 5 and 3/4 inches.
